Mini Pull Through Braid Pony Tail | Q's Hairdos

I love this accent to a ponytail. A pull through braid looks fancy, but it really isn't too difficult when you understand the rhythm. A perfect style for to dress up for holiday parties or more casual for school!

1. I start this style with the ponytail already in place.
2. Part off the front section about 2-3 inches back and about 2-3 inches above the ear.
3. Spray with water and spray gel (linked below.)
4. Part off a one inch section parallel to the part line. 
5. Secure with an elastic at the back of the section.
6. Continue adding an elastic at the back of each one inch section.
7. I have parted off 6 sections.
8. Now we will start the pull through braid.
9. Split the first pony in half.
10. Move the second pony up and through the first pony. 
11. Secure the first pony (both strands) to the third pony.
12. Move the second pony back down and pancake the hair that was just secured.
13. Repeat using the second pony as the first pony.
14. Once there are no more ponies to secure the hair to, you will just secure each first pony to itself underneath the second pony.
15. Continue to pancake and add more elastics until the braid reaches the ponytail.
16. Secure the braid to the ponytail with an elastic.

3 Strand Pull Through Braid Headband | Q's Hairdos

I love this style! It's a little more time consuming with all of the elastics needed. But, it's worth it in the end. It is also super cute added into a messy bun or ponytail.

Start with damp hair and a deep side part. We will be using water and spray gel which I will link below.
Part off a 1 inch section parallel to the part line. Secure with an elastic. Repeat 6 more times to have a total of 7 ponytails down the crown section towards the ear. Now we will start the braid.

1. Split 1st pony into three
2. Split 2nd pony into two
3. Take the center section of the 1st pony and put through middle of 2nd pony
4. Move 2nd pony strands up
5. Pull outside sections of 1st ponies around 2nd pony to meet with the center section of 1st pony
6. Secure 1st pony to 3rd pony

This may seem really confusing at first. But once you get the rhythm down it will go quickly.

I would recommend pancaking each section as you go rather than all at the end as I show in the tutorial. The end result will be much more evenly pancaked.

When you reach the end pony. Split them one more time and secure the first pony to itself underneath the second pony.

Pull Through Christmas Tree Braid

1. Start with damp hair
2. Part of the hair in the front crown section from ear to ear
3. I like to use this teasing brush to get her fine hair in place (I will link this one below)
4. Secure with an elastic
5. Split the ponytail in half- top and bottom
6. Secure the top half with an elastic about 2 inches down
7. Split it in half and pull the bottom pony through the middle of the top one
8. Split the top pony in half and pull the bottom pony through (clip out of the way)
9. Secure with an elastic
10. Again split the top pony in half and pull the bottom pony through.
11. Secure with an elastic
12. One more time splitting the top pony in half and move the bottom one through
13. Secure with and elastic underneath
14. Now you will pancake and pull at the sides of each section. Carefully pull at the putter edges first then move inwards.
15. To make it look like a tree shape, you will make the bottom sections bigger and the sections will be smaller moving upwards.
16. Adjust until you have the desired look
17. Comb through the pony and gently comb sections if needed.
18. Clip the braid out of the way and secure the remaining hair into a low ponytail
19. Secure the braid to the ponytail with an elastic as well. Add a bow and curl the ponytail if desired. 

Braid Christmas Tree

1. Start with slightly wet hair
2. Take the crown section and secure in an elastic
3. Three strand braid the ponytail about 5 inches down the strand
4. Secure in an elastic 
5. Pull at and pancake each stitch of the braid
6. Make the bottom sections the biggest and cascade upwards
7. The top will be the smallest
8. To pancake pull gently at the sides of each section one side at a time while holding the ponytail with the other hand.
9. Pull at the outermost edge first and then move inwards.
10. To cover the elastic with hair, take a small section of hair from the ponytail and wrap it around the elastic a few times. Secure with another elastic underneath, then gently pull the hair downwards to cover the bottom elastic.
11. Add a bow to the bottom or the top!

Triple Braid | Q's Hairdos

I loved this style on Quincy. We did a similar style like this a while back and had a lot of positive feedback, so I figured a tutorial would be good! This is a more advanced style. It took me about 20 minutes. For this style, it is good to have practiced the Pull Through Braid (tutorial here), the Dutch Braid (tutorial here) and the Fishtail Braid (tutorial here)

1. Start with damp hair and spray with gel (I will link the one we use in the description below)
2. Start with a deep side part and from there take diagonal 1 inch sections and secure with an elastic.
3. Continue taking one inch diagonal sections just in the crown section.
4. Once you have about 5 ponies secured, we will be doing a pull through braid
5. Take the first one and split it in half
6. Take the second pony and move it through the first pony
7. Secure the first pony to the third pony with an elastic.
8. Pancake the pony between the elastics.
9. Repeat by splitting the first pony in half and moving the second pony through.
10. Secure the first pony to the third.
11. I linked our slower more detailed pull through braid tutorial above in the description.
12. Continue this until the last pony
13. With the last pony you will simply secure it to itself with an elastic.
14. Now for the Dutch braid you will section off a 2-3 inch section around the head, leaving half of it down.
15. Clip the hair out of the way, then clip the bottom half out of the way. Add more water and gel if needed.
16. For a slower Dutch braid tutorial, you can also find the link above.
17. Start a Dutch braid by taking a one inch section and split into three.
18. Cross the middle over top of the outer section and again cross the middle over the outer section alternating sides.
19. Add hair to each outside section and cross the middle over the top alternating sides each time.
20. I add about an inch section of hair to each stitch.
21. Continue braiding while holding your hands close to the head and parallel to the floor.
22. Once you reach where the pull through braid is sitting, add a few more stitches to the braid without adding hair.
23. Secure it with an elastic and now pancake the Dutch braid by lighting pulling at the edges of each stitch.
24. Now secure the Dutch braid and the pull through braid together with an elastic.
25. Take out the elastic from the dutch braid.
26. To add the Fishtail, you will split the pony in half and take a small section from the back of one side and add it to the opposite side.
27. Now take a small section from the other side and add it to the opposite side. Continue this making sure to alternate sides.
28. Once you have the desired length of the Fishtail, you can pancake and add an elastic.

Pull Through Braid Pigtails | Q's Hairdos

Such a fun way to spice up the regular braided pigtails! This style stays in well if you use spray gel to keep those baby hairs put. Once you get the rhythm down, this style is simple to do!

Start by parting down the center of the head. One trick that helps me center the part down the back is by placing my finger at the base of the hairline (top of the neck) and part the hair with the comb from the top downwards to my finger. Secure the left half of the hair out of the way. Spray the hair with water and spray gel if desired.

1. Take a 1 1/2-2 inch section from the part line to the hairline and secure with an elastic in the middle of that section.
2. Continue taking 1 1/2-2 inch sections parallel to the first all the way down the back of the head.
3. Once you have finished the right side, do the same on the left side.

Now you will begin the pull through braid.

1. Split the first pony in half
2. Move the second pony through the first pony and clip out of the way
3. Secure the first pony to the third pony
4. Pancake
5. Repeat steps 1-4 until you have reached the bottom pony

Next you will split the pony in half, move the second pony through, but this time secure the ponytail to itself with an elastic. Then pancake. Continue this process until the end of the strands. At the very bottom I secure both ponytails together with an elastic in the same spot as the last elastic was placed. It just finishes it off a little better. Pancake for desired effect.

Repeat on the left side.

How to Three Strand Pull Through Braid Mohawk | Q's Hairdos

This tutorial shows how to do a three strand pull through braid into a mohawk type hairstyle. In the tutorial I explain the method using three ponies at a time.

1. Split 1st pony into three
2. Split 2nd pony into two
3. Take the center section of the 1st pony and put through middle of 2nd pony

Pull Through with a Micro Braid | Q's Hairdos

A diagonally styled pull through braid with a micro braid accent over the top. This style is easier than it may look. Adding a micro braid in the front before you start the pull through braid makes it simple to pull across the top after finishing the pull through braid. I do secure the micro braid with an elastic in the middle of the pull through braid to keep it centered on the pull through braid. I just said braid a lot... are you confused now? Pull Through Crown Braid | Q's Hairdos

A cute way to get that full crown braid without needing a ton of hair! The pull through braid can look more full by using a method called pancaking. I love the pull through braid because it keeps those little hairs in place with the elastics when a regular braid would fall out easier. I hope you enjoy this tutorial!

Three Strand Pull Through Braid | Q's Hairdos

Three strand pull through in a wrap around braid! In the video I start off with all the hair sectioned into small ponies. Each section is about 1 1/2 inches wide.

I love this look pulled into a side ponytail as well. Which is simple to just finish off by the ear instead of continuing as I do in the video. The technique is easy if you remember:

1st pony: split into three

2nd pony: split into two

1. middle strand of 1st pony goes through middle of 2nd pony

2. wrap edge strands of 1st pony around 2nd pony

3. connect 1st pony (all three strands) to 3rd pony

This style does take quite a bit longer than a simple 5-10 minute style. But sometimes it is worth the extra time when the end result is so cute!

Pull Through Headband Braid

A few tips

-small elastics that aren't too stretchy are best
-dry hair is easier to work with
-spray it down just slightly to get those baby hairs in
-pull other hair back into a pony so it's easier to access the front
-keep your hands close to the head when putting the elastics on
-pull the hair taught before putting the elastic on
-comb through to keep each section straight


This braid usually takes just less than 10 minutes for me to do. Quincy usually just plays with some toys while I do her hair but for the sake of sitting still I let her watch a show :) Let me know if you have any questions!
