How I Define My Natural Waves/ Curls | Q's Hairdos | Tessi's Hairstyle

During the summer I love to wear my hair naturally curly. I try to use less heat during the summer since our hair is already getting more heat from being out in the sun. It's important to protect your hair from the summer damage- sun, chlorine, salt. A few tips:

-Wear a hat
-Add leave in conditioner to the hair before getting in the water
-Get hair wet with fresh water before getting in the water
-Use products that protect the hair against UV damage and chlorine, salt water, and hard water

If you aren't sure what products might help protect your hair, comment below, I would love to help! Let's keep our hair healthy this summer!

All of the products that I am using can be found at the link below- but if you would like to know how to get them for cheaper or with a discount comment below and I will help you!

tessi.mymonat.com

leave in conditioner https://tessi.mymonat.com/shop/products/restore-leave-in-conditioner
Curl Cream https://tessi.mymonat.com/shop/products/curl-cream
Rejuvenique Oil (miracle oil!) https://tessi.mymonat.com/shop/products/rejuveniqe-oil-intensive
Taffy https://tessi.mymonat.com/shop/products/restyle-sculpting-taffy
Renew Shampoo https://tessi.mymonat.com/shop/products/renew-shampoo?taxon_id=19

  1. After washing my hair with Renew Shampoo I add Restore Leave in conditioner starting at the ends and working my way upwards.
  2. I then run my fingers through my hair until my hair starts to form into waves or curls together-this is called "noodling"
  3. I flip my head upside down and continue "noodling"
  4. Once my hair feels smooth from roots to ends, I start to scrunch it upwards, still with my head upside down.
  5. I squeeze the extra water out just with my hands.
  6. Now I stand up and place my curls where I want them, parting my hair, and twisting pieces that don't want to curl properly.
  7. Next I add Curl Cream
  8. Scrunch the curl cream in starting at the ends.
  9. Next take a t shirt and scrunch some of the water out
  10. Then I will use the diffuser and dry at the roots first
  11. Then dry the ends upside down first
  12. Then flip over and finish drying
  13. Take a dry t shirt and scrunch the hair to break up the product if it feels crunchy
  14. To finish I add a few drops of Rejuvenique Oil mixed with the Taffy and gently add to the ends to decrease frizz.
  15. For second and third day curls I like to use a curl refresher- Monat has one that you can get for free with your order this month, if you are interested comment below!

How to Curl Short Hair + How I Make Curls Last 7 Days! | Q's Hairdos | Tessi's Hairstyle

I chopped my hair about 3 months ago now and I have been loving it! I filmed this tutorial about a month ago when I had finally figured out how I like to curl it while short! I hope it helps and as always, if you have questions, comment below! It takes me about 15-20 minutes to curl my hair. But then it lasts me a week! At the end I show how I keep my curls and what it looks like on day 2!

I have started to use Monat hair products and I am in love. My hair has never felt so soft! Breakage that I had been dealing with for 6 months is literally healed... I can't believe it! If you would like to to find out what products are best for your particular hair, send me a message! I would love to help you have great hair too! It's as simple as changing your shampoo. Also message me if you want 15% off!

  1. After washing my hair, I add Monat's Blow Out Cream, Inner Force Restructuring Serum (great for over processed and damaged hair), and Rejuvabeads to my ends (to help heal split ends!)
  2. I then let my hair air dry as long as I can.
  3. Then I will take the blow dryer to it and round brush the curl out from the back of my hair.
  4. I like to use a large round brush with boar bristles.
  5. Once my hair is 100% dry, then I take the hair about 1 inch above my ear and clip it out of the way.
  6. Starting at the front, I take about 1-1 1/2 inch sections and I will be curling my hair with a 1 inch wand.
  7. Always be careful about what temperature you are using to curl your hair. It should never be above 400. Best to keep it close to 350.
  8. I use the wand upside down and hold it parallel to my face.
  9. Wrapping the hair away from my face, keeping the last two inches off of the wand
  10. Hold the hair on the wand for about 10 seconds.
  11. For this bottom layer I like to pull at the curl once I let it go from the wand, to straighten it a bit.
  12. This makes it so that the curl isn’t so tight on the bottom layer.
  13. At the back where I have more natural wave to my hair, I like to take the curling iron and rub it at the top if it is still a bit wavy to help loosen that wave before I wrap it around the wand.
  14. Continue taking 1- 1 1/2 inch sections, until you reach the back.
  15. Then repeat on the opposite side going in the opposite direction so that the curl is away from your face.
  16. Take the next few inches of hair from the clipped section and curl each section away from the face. I like to start at the back to keep the uncurled hair where I can see it better.
  17. For this section I straighten out the curl just slightly but not a lot like the bottom section.
  18. I do one more section the same way.
  19. Then for the very top I make sure to brush out the hair before I curl that section to keep it smooth.
  20. Keep the wand parallel to the face, so you won’t curl the top few inches.
  21. Once done curling, I gently run my fingers through the curls to break them up a bit.
  22. Then I like to smooth them out with a bit of Rejuveniqe Oil from Monat.
  23. I don’t use hairspray on my hair very often, but you could spray your curls at this point as well.
  24. Now I will show what I do to keep my curls lasting longer.
  25. At night I put my hair either half up or all the way up in a soft scrunchy. The best are velvet or silk. I pull at the roots to give a little volume.
  26. Also sleeping on a silk pillowcase helps.
  27. In the morning I let it out and then use a wide toothed comb to gently comb through my curls.
  28. I add a little more Rejuveniqe oil and encourage my curls to form back together and use some dry shampoo if needed.

Since chopping off my hair, I have been playing with shorter hairstyles. These are 5 of my go to super quick and simple styles!

Style 1

  1. I have previously dried and curled my hair, a tutorial for that will be coming soon.
  2. I start by adding some dry shampoo (linked below)
  3. Let it sit for about 30 seconds then gently shake your hair through your fingers to loosen it up.
  4. Part off a 3 inch section on one side of the part line (the side with less hair)
  5. Start twisting the hair towards the back of the head.
  6. Gently tug at the hair to give more height at the crown.
  7. While holding the twist against the head, secure the twist with a bobby pin placing it parallel to the ground.

  1. Style 2

  1. Similar to style one but take a 1-2 inch section of hair instead.
  2. Start twisting the hair towards the back of the head.
  3. While holding the twist against the head, secure the twist with a bobby pin placing it parallel to the ground.
  4. Take another 1-2 inch section just below the first and repeat by twisting and securing with a bobby pin.
Style 3
  1. Take a one inch section next to the part line on the side with more hair
  2. Split the hair into two.
  3. Cross the front piece over top of the back piece.
  4. Add a one inch section to the front piece.
  5. Cross over top of the back piece.
  6. Continue adding hair to the front piece and crossing over top of the back piece until you have reached the side of the head leaving about 1 inch of hair covering the ear.
  7. Now simply twist both strands towards the front and cross over top of each other towards the back.
  8. Keep twisting and crossing without adding hair until you have reached the end of the strands.
  9. Secure with an elastic.
  10. Gently tug at each stitch moving down the rope braid until you have the desired look.
Style 4
  1. This style is a continuation of the previous rope braid.
  2. Take the rope braid and pull it towards the back.
  3. Secure with two bobby pins in an 'x' shape.
  4. On the opposite side of the head, take a 2-3 inch section of hair.
  5. Twist the hair towards the back.
  6. Keep twisting until the strand is twisted to the end.
  7. Put the twist across the top and through the rope braid that is secured.
  8. Secure the twist with two bobby pins as well.
  9. Gently tug at the twist to loosen it up a bit for the desired look.

Style 5
  1. Take the crown section and tease the hair (brush is linked below)
  2. Then gently smooth out the top without brushing out all of the volume.
  3. Secure the crown section with an elastic at the back of the section.
  4. Take another elastic and add our signature messy bun (tutorial linked below)
  5. Wrap the elastic around a few times, then while keeping it on your fingers,
  6. Split the pony into two.
  7. Fold the top piece up and hold with your finger.
  8. Curl the bottom piece down and hold with your thumb.
  9. Take the elastic and pull it over top of the hair forming two buns.
  10. Now take the long pieces and curl them in towards the buns and tuck them into the elastic.

4 Quick 5 Minute Hairstyles | Q's Hairdos | Tessi's Hairstyles

Four of my go to styles when I need to get my hair out of my face and get out the door! I love these styles when my hair is dirty as well. Just use a little dry shampoo, (my favorite is linked below) add a quick braid, and you're good to go! Each of these styles took me about 5 minutes, of course if you are a beginner at braiding it may take a little longer. But practice makes it faster! Drop questions below and also let me know if you would love to see more styles like this for moms or anyone who just needs a quick style!

Style 1: Rope Braid in the Front
  1. Start with a little dry shampoo.
  2. Add some clear mascara/brow gel to tame flyaways in the front.
  3. Take a 1 inch section at your part line.
  4. Split into two.
  5. Cross the front piece over top of the back piece.
  6. Add a 1 inch section of hair to the front section.
  7. Cross over top the back.
  8. Add a 1 inch section of hair to the front.
  9. Cross over the back.
  10. Repeat these steps until you reach an inch or two above the ear.
  11. I like to leave hair covering my ear.
  12. Take each strand and twist them to the right and cross to the left.
  13. Keep twisting and crossing a few more times then add an elastic.
  14. Gently pancake the rope braid starting at the top.
  15. You can leave it as is, or take a small section of hair from back behind the ear an inch or two.
  16. Secure the rope braid close to the head with the elastic to keep it out of your face.
  17. Take out the first elastic.
Style 2: Dutch Braid
  1. Start at the part line and take a 1 inch section.
  2. Split the hair into three.
  3. For a Dutch braid, we will cross the outside strands underneath the middle strand.
  4. Then add hair to the front section (about a 1 inch section) cross underneath the middle.
  5. Add hair to the back section and then cross under the middle.
  6. Add hair to the front section then cross under the middle.
  7. Repeat these steps until you have reached the side of your head. A few inches above the ear.
  8. Stop adding hair and three strand braid to the end.
  9. Add an elastic.
  10. Pancake the hair for the desired look.

Style 3: Dutch Braid with a Rope Braid Half up Style
  1. Start with the previous style Dutch Braid.
  2. Now on the opposite side of the partline, take a 1 inch section and split into two.
  3. We will be doing a rope braid.
  4. Cross the front strand over top of the back strand.
  5. Add hair to the front strand and cross over top of the back.
  6. Repeat 2 more times.
  7. Now twist the hair to the left and cross to the right until the end of the strands.
  8. Take the dutch braid and the rope braid and secure them in the middle back with an elastic.
  9. You can take out the elastic from the bottom of the Dutch braid.

Style 4: Rope Braid
  1. We will start this style the same as the first.
  2. Take a 1 inch section at your part line.
  3. Split into two.
  4. Cross the front piece over top of the back piece.
  5. Add a 1 inch section of hair to the front section.
  6. Cross over top the back.
  7. Add a 1 inch section of hair to the front.
  8. Cross over the back.
  9. Repeat these steps until you reach just below the ear.
  10. Take the remaining hair and sweep it to the side you are braiding on.
  11. Split the remaining hair in half and add it to each section.
  12. Twist these sections towards the front and cross them to the back.
  13. Continue twisting and crossing until you reach the end of your hair.
  14. Secure with an elastic.
  15. Gently pancake the hair for desired look.
  16. I like to pull out a few pieces to frame my face.
  17. Add clear mascara to tame flyaways.

Crown Braided Double Bun | Q's Hairdos | Tessi's Hairstyle

Find us on Instagram @teswood (www.instagram.com/teswood) and Facebook Q's Hairdos (www.facebook.com/qshairdos)

A fun up do style for a special occasion or any day at all!

  1. Start by using some dry shampoo (I will link my favorite below) to give texture and rid any excess oil.
  2. At the part line start a dutch braid (for a dutch braid tutorial you can find the link below as well)
  3. You will grab a section of hair and cross middle over top of the outside pieces
  4. Add to the side section and cross the middle section over the top
  5. Add to the other side and cross the middle over the top
  6. Continue this for about 4 or 5 stitches
  7. Be sure to turn your head so that the hair is braided where it needs to be, so that when you pull it back it doesn't bubble.
  8. Braid to the end and secure with an elastic.
  9. Now pancake for the desired effect by softly pulling on the outer edges of the braid.
  10. Take a small section on the other side and add a rope braid
  11. Split in two and cross one over the top then add into the front section
  12. Cross over again and add to the front section
  13. Continue with about 4 or 5 stitches
  14. Now twist each section and cross over each other to twist all the way to the end
  15. Secure with an elastic and pancake the rope braid.
  16. Take the braid and pull across the back to secure with two bobby pins
  17. Take the rope twist and tuck it under the braid, then secure with a bobby pin
  18. Take out the elastics
  19. At this point the style is pretty as is and you can just curl the remaining hair, or you can add the buns
  20. For the buns, split the hair in half and take a large elastic
  21. I will be doing two of my signature messy buns here, for a slower tutorial you can tap the Top Knot tutorial at the end of this video, or you can find the link below.
  22. Basically just split the hair in half and pull the elastic over then tuck the ends back in
  23. Adjust the hair by pulling at the ends to make them fluffier.
  24. I like to pull out a few pieces to frame my face and that's it!

Three Simple Fancy Ponytails | Q's Hairdos | Tessi's Hairstyle

These three styles are really simple and quick (you know, my favorite kind) but I love that they spice up that ponytail and make it a little more fancy.

Style #1 Rope Braid into a Ponytail

  1. Start by taking a 2 inch by 1 inch section in the front at your partline.
  2. Split in half and cross the front over the back
  3. Add a 1 inch section to the front piece and cross over the back
  4. Again add a 1 inch section to the front piece and cross over the back
  5. I continue this method until I reach the ear
  6. Stop adding hair at the ear and simple twist the two pieces to the left and cross them to the right (while watching the video it will look opposite, but when you do it on yourself it will be the same)
  7. Secure with an elastic and pancake for desired effect
  8. Gather the hair into your hands at the height you would like your ponytail
  9. Grab the rope braid and add into your ponytail
  10. Secure with a large elastic
  11. Take a small section of hair from underneath and wrap around the elastic
  12. Secure with a bobby pin
  13. Take the small elastic out
  14. I like to pull at the hair in my crown to add a little height
  15. You're finished!

Style #2 Two Twists into a Ponytail
  1. Take a section about 2 inches back in the crown and clip out of the way.
  2. Take the front section and grab a small part, then just start twisting the hair together towards the ear.
  3. Twist all the way to the back use hairspray if needed
  4. Secure with a clip
  5. Do the same to the crown section that we clipped out of the way
  6. Twist it parallel to the first twist all the way to the back
  7. Clip the twists to hold them in place
  8. Gather all of the hair to where you would like your ponytail to sit
  9. Take the clips out and secure all of the hair with a large elastic
  10. Take a small section of hair from underneath and wrap around the elastic
  11. Secure with a bobby pin
  12. I like to pull at the hair in my crown to add a little height
  13. That's style #2

Style #3 Fake a Longer Ponytail
  1. Take the hair from the ears up
  2. Brush the hair straight back
  3. Push the hair forwards slightly to add height
  4. Secure this top section with a large elastic
  5. Before pulling the hair all the way through the last time, I left it pulled halfway to keep it out of the way for this next section, you could also use a clip.
  6. Take the bottom section and brush upwards to sit right underneath the top pony
  7. Secure with a small clear elastic
  8. Take a small section of hair from underneath and wrap around the elastic
  9. Secure with a bobby pin
  10. I like to pull at the hair in my crown to add a little height and add hairspray
  11. All done!

Double Braided Low Messy Bun | Q's Hairdos | Tessi's Hairstyles

My go-to for a long time was this low messy bun. I loved to add different braids and twists to spice it up a bit. So this time I added a lace braid on top and a dutch braid right underneath it.

  • To begin take a small section at the part line and split into three.
  • Cross the right strand under the middle and the left strand under the middle
  • Add a small section to the right strand and cross under the middle
  • Add a small section to the left strand and cross under the middle
  • Again add a small section to the right strand and cross under the middle
  • and again add a small section to the left strand and cross under the middle
  • At this point I stop adding hair to the right (or bottom) section
  • Continue adding hair to the left (or top) section, making sure to angle the hair towards the back
  • Add hair to about four more stitches then regular braid to the end and secure with an elastic
  • Pancake for desired effect
Clip this braid on the other side of the head. Then start the dutch braid (which is exactly how you started the lace braid)

  • To begin take a small section at the part line and split into three
  • Cross the right strand under the middle and the left strand under the middle
  • Add a small section to the right strand and cross under the middle
  • Add a small section to the left strand and cross under the middle
  • Again add a small section to the right strand and cross under the middle
  • and again add a small section to the left strand and cross under the middle
  • Continue adding hair to each side until you reach behind the ear then regular braid to the end
  • Secure with an elastic
  • Pancake for desired effect
Pull all of the remaining hair into a low ponytail to make the messy bun.
  • Pull a large elastic around the ponytail until it will be the last time you pull it through
  • Keep hold of the elastic on your fingers of your right hand
  • Using your left hand split the ponytail in half
  • Curl the top half up and hold with your right hand
  • Curl the bottom half down and hold with your right hand
  • Pull the elastic over the hair that the right hand is holding
  • Now tuck the remaining ends back into the elastic by curling them towards the bun
Take the bottom dutch braid and pull across the top of the messy bun. Tuck the end of the braid into the bottom of the messy bun. Make sure to stick it into the elastic as well. Then take the top lace braid and pull it across to sit above the dutch braid. Secure with a bobby pin, making sure to hide the bobby pin. Then tuck the end of the braid into the elastic of the messy bun. I like to loosen the hair in my crown section a bit. And adjust the bun to how you desire!

Half Up Dutch Crown Braid | Tessi's Turn | Q's Hairdos

I love this style because it's easy to dress up or down. Great for around the house or date night! If you can braid, you can do this hairstyle! It's really not too difficult.

Start on the right side by taking a one inch by two inch section near the part line. Split in three and complete one full stitch of the Dutch braid. I remember the Dutch braid easier when I think about taking the middle strand and crossing over top of the outer strands. After the first stitch, add a section of hair to each outer strand and cross the middle over top of the outside. Add a section again and cross the middle over top of the outside. Continue by alternating sides until you reach the ear. I like to leave a little bit of hair covering my ear. Then stop adding hair and braid to the end. Secure with an elastic (but not too tightly) and then pancake for desired look. Leave this braid down while you braid the left side.

Braid the left side the same. A Dutch braid to the ear and then braid to the end. Secure with an elastic then pancake.

Once both sides are braided, you can take the right braid and pull it across the back. Secure in place by crossing two bobby pins. Try to hide them in the hair (this was a bit tricky for me since I couldn't see the back of my head.) Next, pull the left braid across the back, over top of the right braid and tuck into the right braid. Secure by crossing two bobby pins as well. Then take out the elastics (this is why you won't want to secure the elastics too tightly.) I added one more bobby pin where it was needed. Then you're done!

Rope Braid into a Fishtail Braid | Tessi's Hairstyle | Q's Hairdos

This style is a french rope braid into a french fishtail braid. It may sound complicated, but it is quite easy once you get the rhythm of the braids down. The style took me less than 5 minutes to do. A great go to for a quick style!

The rope braid is simple:
1. Take a one inch section and split in two
2. Twist by crossing the front over the back
3. Incorporate hair to the front section
4. Twist again
5. Repeat until you reach the ear

Pancake and loosen the rope braid.
Then we start to Fishtail braid:
1. Take a small piece from the outer edge of the left side and cross
2. Same on the right
3. Incorporate hair to the left side
4. Take a small piece from both the original section and the new added section and cross
5. Repeat this process until there is no more hair to incorporate

Regular fishtail braid until desired length is reached.

Pancake and loosen until you have the desired look!

Every Day Soft Curls | Q's Hairdos | Tessi's Turn

I have had some questions about how I curl my hair. So I thought I would do a little tutorial to show you the soft curl I wear almost every day. A few tips to keep in mind:

  • curl away from your face
  • keep the wand parallel to your face
  • depending on the thickness of your hair will determine the size of section and time you hold on the wand
  • use a heat protectant or oil to avoid damaging your hair over time
The wand I use heats up enough for the curl to hold all day. My hair holds curl really well, so I only have to curl my hair twice a week. I also only wash my hair twice a week which really helps from drying it out. Comment below if you have questions about this!

Thank you so much to those who have subscribed to our YouTube channel already. We so appreciate the support!

Top Knot | Q's Hairdos | Tessi's Turn

Hey ladies! I had a bunch of questions about doing this top knot on my hair vs Quincy's hair so I figured I would just do another tutorial for you all! I hope this answers any questions you had!
